The evening edition of today’s blog. (As there is only so much one email post can contain.)
Our ryokan host recommended we visit the Pontocho for dinner. So here is what we saw along the way.
There’s a ton of little bars and restaurants (and expensive). We picked a sushi restaurant that was had some fare that was moderately priced called Kappa Sushi.
Oh my goodness, it was awesome sushi! (And we got to watch the chef prepare it.) First, the chef gave us a yummy appetizer of pickled fish and soybeans.
I had a sampler. I think it was salmon, white fin, tuna, tamago (egg), shrimp, squid, sea urchin, and eel. (It was the first time I had sea urchin!)
It was amazing sushi! But probably the most expensive meal we’ll have on this trip. My first sushi in Japan. (I didn’t have it in 2017, when I was here last.)
Gion is vibrant at night. (Though, we saw a few host bar touts pestering people on the street. Thankfully, we weren’t young enough for them to bother.)
Then we headed back for a soak in the deep bath. The floors are heated here too and it makes a big difference in the temperature of the room.
Our little garden lit up made the place feel so cozy.
